How to file a travel insurance claim under different scenarios?

Whether it’s a business trip or a leisure vacation, having a comprehensive travel insurance policy ensures the complete safety of a journey. However, to get the maximum benefits, it is imperative to know—how to file a claim?

Some general points that should be kept in mind for a hassle-free claim settlement process: –

  • Usually, all the insurance companies have appointed an Assistance Service Provider (ASP) who will be your single point of contact during your vacation
  • At the time of loss, it is necessary to immediately inform the ASP and register the claim, even if the policyholder will pursue the claim after returning to the home country

Now let’s understand the claim process that needs to be followedunderdifferentscenarios:

  1. In case of hospitalisation

Firstly, the hospital should know about the travel insurance cover along with the details of the ASP. Simultaneously, you should inform the ASP about the hospitalisation.

In thecase of a planned hospitalisation, inform the insurer at least five days before the admission. For emergency hospitalisation, inform the insurer as soon as possible. For the reimbursement of medical expenses, it is necessary to inform the insurer within 30 days from the date of discharge. Some insurers reduce or reject the claim amount if they do not get information within the stipulated period.

  1. In case of total loss of checked-in baggage

If you donot receive the checked-in baggage, inform the airline and the ASP as soon as possible.

If the value of items exceeds a particular limit, say $100, the ASP can ask for the purchase bill.

  1. In case of delayin arrival of checked-in baggage

If one doesn’t get the timely delivery of checked-in baggage attached to the ticket, inform the same to the airline and simultaneously report it to the ASP.

  1. In case of loss of passport

Once you find out the loss, report the matter to the police and simultaneously inform the matter to the ASP.

Copy of passport, if available Details of the attempts made to trace the lost passport
Copy of FIR or police report Original bills or invoices of expenses incurred for obtaining a new passport

 

Note, if the original passport gets traced before the issuance of a new passport, it is the duty of the policyholder to inform the concerned authority and apply for the refund of the money which was paid at the time of submitting the duplicate passport application. When the authority refunds the amount, the same mustbe paid back to the insurance company.

  1. In case of third-party liability

A comprehensive travel insurance also covers bodily injuries or damages caused to a third-person or property due to acts of the policyholder. On theoccurrence of any such event, immediately inform the ASP, and submit the complete details of the event. If the event takes place in a public place, the matter should be reported to the police as well.

Note, the policyholder should not settle or accept a compromise without the written consent of the ASP.

  1. In case of accidental disability

In thecase of disability arising out of theaccident, the ASP has to be informed on an immediate basis along with the submission of complete details of the accident. In addition to this, it is necessary to inform the police as well.

  1. In case of accidental death

If a policyholder meets with an accident and dies, the insurer offers compensation to the nominee.

  1. In case of hijack

In thecase of a hijacking, the policyholder should inform the ASP immediately after the release from captivity. If the insured dies due to circumstances created or injury caused by hijackers, the nominee needs to furnish the information to the ASP.

  1. In case of compassionate visit

If a policyholder is hospitalisedand afamily member travels to the foreign destination to stay with him/her, the insurer covers the latter’s travelling expenses as well.

  1. In case of missing theconnecting flight

If due to delayed landing ofthe main flight, you miss the connecting flight to the next destination, inform the ASP immediately with the complete details of both the flights, the actual time of the arrival and the reason for the delay.

Confirmation received from the flight operator of the delayed flight vis-à-vis expected and actual time of arrival along with the reason forthe delay Unused flight ticket for the ongoing flight (missed flight) with an endorsement received from the common carrier for the same
